FAQ for Classes, Courses & Guided Retreats
Frequently Asked Questions:
- Do I need to book for classes?
No. our weekly classes are available on a drop-in basis although you can still book your place in advance through our website here.
- Do I need to book for courses?
If you’re staying for lunch, yes, please book by noon THREE days before the course at the latest. If lunch isn’t needed we can normally accommodate everyone, but we advise booking in advance to be sure. Click here to view upcoming courses.
- Do I have to start at the beginning of a series?
No. Classes are specifically designed so anyone, even complete beginners, can join at any point and get into the swing of things. Classes run all year with occasional breaks around the school holidays.
- Can classes be attended by beginners?
Yes, classes can be attended by complete beginners. Occasional exceptions will be clearly highlighted. Our schedule includes an ‘in-depth’ class which can also be attended by beginners.
-Will I be required to speak?
No, although there will often be opportunities for Q&A at classes & courses. We have a cafe where people relax, socialise and ask questions during breaks or at the end of a session.
- Do I have to be Buddhist to attend?
No. Our teachings follow a special presentation of Buddhism called, ‘Kadam Dharma’ which is suitable for everyone, Buddhist and non-Buddhist. People from all backgrounds attend and find the help they need, everybody is welcome.
- Do I need a yoga mat?
No. Our classes do not include any physical exercise and most people choose to sit on chairs, although we do have cushions available at Jangchub Ling Centre if you prefer.
- Do I need any special clothing?
No, but you might like to bring socks or slippers as shoes aren’t worn in the meditation room. The heating is set to 20 degrees and you can bring a blanket if you prefer to be warmer.
- What happens in a weekly class?
We start with a short, optional prayer to help us to prepare our mind, or you can just sit quietly and gather your thoughts. This is followed by a short breathing meditation, a practical teaching on how we can apply meditation to our daily lives, and another meditation of 15 - 20 minutes. We then have refreshments and informal discussion if you have time. Our ‘in-depth’ class includes longer prayers of about 15 minutes.
- What happens on a course?
Courses are the same as classes, they just have more sessions. A half day course will have two 75 minute sessions with a break for refreshments followed by an optional lunch, and day courses have an extra teaching session after lunch, followed by another break and a shorter session for Q&A and meditation.
- What happens on a guided retreat?
These have four sessions lasting an hour each. Each session is structured the same as a class, with a shorter teaching and more emphasis on the meditation.

You’re not required to speak at any of our classes, courses or retreats although we have a cafe where people relax and socialise during breaks so you can take the opportunity for some informal discussion and to ask questions, if you wish.
